Matthew McCarthy ’17 on Revolutionary Czechoslovakia, ’68 ’77 ’89
This project is an advanced, integrative study, serving as the culmination of my collegiate academic and work experiences and RES 495 Research and Seminar course. It builds on my knowledge of Czechoslovak history, curriculum development, and museology acquired through coursework at Grinnell in RES 291 20th Century Perspectives on Central and Eastern European Literature, HIS 210 History of Education in the United States, and ARH 195 Introduction to Museum Studies, and in those courses taken during my semester of off-campus study at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, namely Punk and Dissent: Underground and Alternative Culture from Nazism through Communism and Political and Cultural History of East Central Europe since WWI. Additionally, this project drew on my Czech language skills acquired through independent study and my time in the Czech Republic and previous experiences with the digital humanities.
